A southern suburb of Minneapolis, Bloomington is a city in Hennepin County, in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro area.
The community was named for Bloomington, IL. The city covers a total area of 99.4 km² (38.4 mi²) of which 91.9 km² (35.5 mi²) comprises of land and 7.5 km² (2.9 mi² is water. There are three primary land types in the city. The northeastern part of the city is a sand plain, the western portion of the city are dominated by low hills and the far south lies within the valley of the Minnesota River. The important water bodies in the city are the Minnesota River, Long Meadow Lake, Bush Lake, Lake Normandale, Nine Mile Creek, and about 100 small lakes and ponds.
